As earlier mentioned that the major cause of these spots is more exposure to sunlight especially U.V. light. The skin color pigment in our body is melanin. This pigment is synthesized and secreted by the melanocytes that are located in the upper layer of skin called the epidermis.

When ultraviolet light falls on skin cells and ultimately on melanocytes, then the melanin production increases rapidly. It generates skin burning like a tan and deeper layers of skin must be protected from further damage due to U.V. light. Otherwise, these rays can cause mutation in genes and ultimately cancer in skin as well as body.

Overproduction of this pigment is also responsible for the development of liver spots on your face. So, liver spots are also associated with more exposure to sunlight other than aging.
